Inserted in a 637 sqm lot and with an 840 sqm gross construction area, this villa, called Casa de São Miguel, was built between 1939 and 1940 by Joaquim Roque da Fonseca, with a project of Manuel António da Cruz, and reveals a strong influence of the drawings of the French modernist architect R. Mallet-Stevens (1886-1945), namely of his most emblematic work: the Cavrois Village. As it is characteristic of the Modernist style, some elements, typical of the decorative arts (Art Deco), were added. In this case, the main staircase and the combination of vertical and horizontal geometric volumes of stylized lines, accompanied by surrounding organic forms.
Over the years the villa has had some remodelling, expansion and alteration interventions, highlighting the adaptation project in the 60s of the internationally renowned architect Jose Gomes Bastos, known for his iconic works of the time.
In recent years (2016/2020) it was deeply restored in two fundamental respects:
1. From the architectural point of view, the original Art Deco draft was returned to the property with the recreation, on the upper floor, of a generous terrace, in an interpretation made by the architects Ana Neves and Bruno Morgado.
2. From the point of view of sustainability, a series of investments in renewable energies and improvements in energy efficiency have been made, which have enabled the building to be given energy rating A. The garage has a charging station for electric vehicles.
