Significant development potential
The Esterel coastline, its red porphyry rock dropping into a turquoise sea, drew some of the most influential painters of their generation from the turn of the twentieth century onward.
In 1902, Henri-Edmond Cross painted Rocks at Trayas — on this very shoreline — a few years after hosting, in his garden at nearby Saint-Clair, a circle of artists that included Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, Andre Derain and Albert Marquet. It was from these gatherings, and this Mediterranean light they sought to capture through pure color, that Fauvism emerged. Marquet returned again and again to paint the Mediterranean shore — its coves, ochre villas, blue horizons — with the same economy of means and precision of tone that define his work.
