Fréjus, located in the Var department, is what can be called a true city of art and history. Ville Provencal, it was the first military port of the whole Roman Mediterranean. Today it is a city full of art and culture in the heart of the Côte d’Azur, making it a varied, pleasant holiday destination. There are many historical monuments to discover and explore, along with the mouth-watering products of the Provençal terroir, which can be found in the numerous markets dotted around the city. The Frejus Cathedral is worth a visit, built in the 13th century with fortifications and two naves. The cloister, to the north of the cathedral is intricately designed and still in use today as a place of reflection for the local clergymen. The archaeological museum is rather interesting with a vast array of artefacts that have been excavated from the area. You could also visit the Parc de la Ville Aurelienne where you will find part of a 40 km long Roman Aqueduct. The cities Amphitheatre has been restored and is open to public viewing
Fréjus has lovely sandy beaches, situated in a unique gulf where one is seduced by beauty and diversity. There are hidden beaches on the side of Saint Aygulf with sheltered coves, as well as the more popular beaches, which cater to family activities and water sports. It is a sporty city, with many marked trails for pedestrians or cyclists. The city hosts the Roc d’Azur in October, the largest mountain bike rally in the world. If you are travelling with children, then a visit to Aqualand is a must. There are slides, pools, restaurants and shaded areas for picnics.
Fréjus is easily accessible by train, only 1 hour from Nice by TGV, and also close to the motorway. The nearest airport is Nice Cote d’Azur International Airport at a distance of 58.5 km via the A8 motorway.
