The central Algarve is simply beautiful and encompasses some of the regions best beaches and upmarket resorts. Purpose built resorts such as Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura are exclusive and glamorous with top quality facilities such as golf courses, luxury spas, marinas, restaurants, shopping centres and tennis courts. The city of Faro is the capital of the Algarve and is located on the edge of the natural lagoon and Ria Formosa National Park, which is bursting at the seams with birds and wildlife. You can take a tour on an old fishing barge and try to spot flamingos, spoonbills and storks. You’ll also see the farms where oysters, mussels and clams are sustainably cultivated.

Faro has no shortage of attractions and includes a large shopping centre along with historic buildings, national monuments and museums. The beaches are quiet and idyllic and the restaurants offer exceptional Portuguese fare at unbelievable value for money. Incredibly popular with visitors, towns such as Albufeira attract thousands of tourists each year. Located only a short distance from Faro airport, this destination is perfect for families as there are a multitude of activities and events particularly in the summer months. The restaurants, bars and cafes are plentiful and lively, and visitors have the opportunity to explore ancient Roman ruins and the remains of a beautiful castle.

Faro Cathedra was established in the mid 13th century, and from the top of the tower you can view the city right out to the lagoon. Arco da Vila is an exceptionally beautiful archway located just by the marina and decorated in neoclassical design. From here you can access Faro’s old town, with its cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings and plaza with fragrant orange trees.

Faro International Airport is located just 6.2 km from the city centre. There is a bus station at the airport that will transport visitors to the city, alternatively you could hire a car or take a taxi.
