Salleles d’Aude is located in the Aude department, within the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Part of the La Nouvelle Branch of the Canal du Midi runs right through this quaint little town. It is 8 km long with 7 locks and was commissioned around 100 years after the Canal du Midi. The Canal du Midi is the world’s oldest canal and a UNESCO world heritage site. It is popular with visitors who can hire a barge and travel the length or even part of the waterway, stopping in at villages along the way to eat local fare, drink wine and explore. There is a picturesque tree lined promenade running alongside the river, which is the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll or ride a bicycle and take in the beautiful surrounds.

Salleles d’Aude has rich with heritage and there are many historical monuments to explore. The Amphoralis museum is worth a visit as it overlooks an archaeological excavation site, with artefacts dating back to around 20/30 BC. You can admire the beautiful canal bridge and explore the Calvary, which often holds events such as outdoor concerts and exhibitions.

It is located just 9 km from Narbonne, where you can explore the Roman ruins, historical sites, museums, 14th century cathedral and taste the famous bouchons du Languedoc, a delicious biscuit made with almonds, honey and pine nuts. You could also take a short drive (25 km) to nearby Sigean Nature Reserve. This is an African Nature Reserve and the animals include giraffe, lion, cheetah, wild dog and even rhinoceros. The Mediterranean Sea is only a 30-minute drive from the village and there are some excellent beaches to relax and spend the day at.

The town has a good selection of restaurants and bars as well as shops and all the necessary services such as a post office, ATM and medical facilities. Plenty of activities are on offer such as canoeing, fishing, cycling as well as annual festivals, events and weekly markets held in the centre of the town.
