The town of Beziers was once a Roman colony, but is now famous for its delicious wine and bullfighting. There is a famous and very popular 5-day festival called Feria that takes place in August and draws in around 1 million visitors.

You can explore the town through the narrow cobblestone streets, appreciate the fascinating architecture and the many locations of interest. Notably, the fortified Saint Nazaire Cathedral, which was built between the 12th – 15th centuries and has an interesting, almost castle-like, appearance about it. From the viewpoints you will be able to see out across the town, vineyards and all the way out to the Massif Central on a clear day. The Romanesque church of Saint Jacques is another striking religious monument, dating back to the 12th century. There are a total of four art museums and two art galleries to explore, one of the most popular being the Musee des Beaux Arts, which showcases art by the likes of Delacroix and Rubens. Thereafter you can stroll along the Allees Paul Riquet, a tree-lined walkway with shops, cafes and restaurants in abundance with a fusion of Spanish, French and Catalan cuisine. There is a lovely flower market, held every Friday as well as a variety of food, souvenir and second hand goods markets, held throughout the month.

The famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi, also passes through Beziers. The Canal du Midi is the world’s oldest canal and is popular with visitors who can hire a barge and travel the length or even part of the waterway, stopping in at villages along the way to eat local fare, drink wine and explore. Everything in Beziers is within walking distance, and there is a free shuttle bus service transporting visitors from the train and bus stations to the centre of town. Beziers has its own airport and is easily reached from Montpellier and Perpignan.
