This seaside town is probably best known for its boardwalk across the lagoon of the Etang du Doul. Take a leisurely stroll and view the exquisite birdlife, including flocks of striking pink flamingos, Herons, Pelicans and Egrets. The town itself is small yet authentic and picturesque, with narrow paved streets dotted with exceptional restaurants serving delicious and authentic French cuisine. There are some lovely shops and all the necessary services.
Explore and discover ancient French monuments and abbeys, the archaeological museum and art gallery, relax at the pristine beaches and take part in the many water-sports and activities such as kite surfing, wind surfing, fishing, sailing and diving. You could even swim in the crystal clear lagoon waters or take a short drive to the nearby Sigean Nature Reserve, 7 km away. This is an African Nature Reserve and the animals include giraffe, lion, cheetah, wild dog and even rhinoceros.
The area surrounding Peyriac de Mer is a nature-lovers dream with hiking, camping, cycling, bird spotting and nature walking, just a few of the activities available to visitors. The medieval city of Narbonne is only 20 minutes away and worth a visit as you can explore the Roman ruins, historical sites, museums, 14th century cathedral and taste the famous bouchons du Languedoc, a biscuit made with almonds, honey and pine nuts. The famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi, also passes Narbonne, linked by the canal de la Robine. The Canal du Midi is the worldβs oldest canal and is popular with visitors who can hire a barge and travel the length or even part of the waterway, stopping in at villages along the way to eat local fare, drink wine and explore.
Getting to Peyriac de Mer is easy, with the closest airport being Perpignan at a distance of 54 km. The nearest train station is Gare de Narbonne, from where you will need to hire a car, take a taxi or arrange a transfer to the town centre.
