Sainte Maxime Destination Guide

Sainte-Maxime is located in the Gulf of Saint Tropez, in the region of the Cote d’Azur. The town of Sainte-Maxime attracts tourists from all over the world thanks to its exceptional environment and true Provençal lifestyle. What was once a small fishing village is now a hub of activity with visitors and locals sunning themselves on the sandy beaches, exploring the markets or lounging at the local cafes, bars and restaurants.

This town enjoys good sunshine all year round with an exceptional oceanfront vista and the mountain range, Massif des Maures. There are some beautiful apartments in the city centre, luxury residences with beaches nearby and also beautiful villas with exceptional sea views. Sainte-Maxime is the largest seaside resort in the Gulf, with approximately 15,000 inhabitants.

Activities

It tends to be rather quiet in the winter but the summer welcomes around 60,000 visitors each year. There are charming little streets downtown, filled with many different stalls and craftsmen during the summer months, with entertainment and concerts at the Theatre of the Sea. It is also well known for its Casino Barriere, if you fancy a gamble.

St Tropez is located just 15 km away and is easily accessible via the motorway. St Tropez still carries the charm of a typical Provencal village full of history, with those who live there all year round in stark contrast with the holidaymakers and celebrity jet setters who descend upon the port when summer arrives.

You can enjoy the very chic private beaches of Ramatuelle (Pampelonne) with transparent turquoise waters and fine white sand or explore the quieter, more private coves out of sight from others. You can also experience the local and summer festivities such as the typical Provençal market. In October the event Sails of St Tropez brings together the most prestigious sailing boats in the world.

At the end of October there is the Braderie, which transforms the area into a huge market with many luxury brands on sale at incredibly bargain prices. This event attracts people from all over, so be sure to go early in the morning if you want to miss the hoards.

Travel

From the port, you can reach Saint Tropez by Ferry in 20 minutes, or just 25 minutes by car from the motorway. Saint-Maxime is easily accessible by TGV railway station in Saint-Raphaël, and is only a 1h 30-minute drive from the city of Nice.
